Harris Hawk - North Devon. Come visit North Devon to learn how to fly a Harris Hawk
The difference between "falconry" and "hawking".

HAWK WALKS ON EXMOOR FOR ONLY £30 FOR A GROUP OF 3 PEOPLE.

Falconry uses "long winged" birds, (ie, not surprisingly, falcons). The prey is usually pheasant, grouse or partridge. Typically the bird will be carried hooded while the falconer, often with a dog, usually a pointer, will quarter the ground. Once the dog scents prey, the falconer gets into position and releases the falcon. She climbs high and "waits on " above the falconer. The prey is flushed and the falcon swoops.

Hawking uses "short" or "broad" winged birds. The most common in the UK is the Harris Hawk ( Parabuteo Unicinctus). Because of it's biddable character, and intelligence, it has revitalised hawking in this country. Also used are goshawks, which in character at least, are the opposite of Harris Hawks! However, their speed and keeness means that on a good day they are incredible to watch. Other birds commonly used are Red Tailed Hawks, ( another American import) and Sparrowhawks.
The proper title for one who hunts with falcons is, of course, "falconer". One who hunts with a hawk is an "austringer". This ancient word is not very well known nowadays, so in this site the word "falconer" has been used in its place.

We provide hunting experiences with hawks, ferrets and a pointer, after rabbits and pheasant, from September to March.
